Top 5 Albums of 2014

It was hard to compile this list for "Best Album".  So many great albums from some well-known acts.  Of course a lot of people are talking about Mastodon, Pallbearer, etc.  On this list, I wanted to bring attention to bands that not many people will be familiar with.  So hopefully after reading this, you'll at least check out one song from these bands.

5. Girlflesh - Nudes

Girlflesh was definitely a darkhorse this year.  Girlflesh caught my attention when filmaker/podcaster/wrestling personality, Rob Dimension, gave Girlflesh a like on Facebook.  Nudes was the first electronic album I heard in a long time.  Nudes is one of my favorite finds of 2014.

4. Kyng - Burn The Serum

Even though they're on a well known label, have songs played on the radio, touring with well-know acts, I still feel that there are a lot of people who need to hear Kyng.  Trampled Sun was great album.  But Burn The Serum really topped it.  They sound way better.  They play way better.  And of course their album art is even way better.  Really proud of these guys.  They sure had one hell of a year.

3. Muscle and Marrow - The Human Cry

This was also a great new find for 2014.  BillyGoat from Doomed & Stoned brought these guys my attention.  This Portland based duo bring a unique sound to the Doom sub-genre.  The Human Cry is a very dark and haunting piece.  Great to see more awesome bands coming out of Oregon.

2. Hellbeard - Dark/Light EP

This was my biggest anticipated release of 2014.  This was Post-Metal at it's best.  Who knew that a 3 song E.P. would be a very crushing release.  The guys from Hellbeard have been working really hard to put out this release, and it really shows once you hit that play button.  And just because it's #2, it doesn't make it any less.  I really loved this E.P. and can't wait for it to come on vinyl.

1. Akem Manah - Demons of the Sabbat

This was another album I've been looking forward to.  And I'm really glad that Dead Nedry put this out as a full-length, instead of two e.p.'s.   "Reign of Terror" is one of the catchiest song that Akem Manah has written.  But "The Twisted Rites of Satan's Bride" is the best track from this album.  And of course Adam Richardson's vocal spot on "Nightfall" was also great.  Akem Manah topped themselves again with Demons of the Sabbat, and becomes my favorite album of 2014.

Hellbeard - "DARK/LIGHT E.P." (2014)

Hellbeard are back.  And what a fuck'n e.p. they put out.  Ever since I heard "Black Snail" on youtube, I've been waiting on some new Hellbeard.  Their first album, "Scarecrow" was a solid album.  And with Dark/Light, they take their sound to a whole other level.

Dark/Light features 3 track, which are the best and heaviest songs that Hellbeard have played.  Once the first track, "Maiden of Mercy", starts to play, you knew that this is going to be a totally different Hellbeard.  The one thing that I like about this song is during the middle, they play a really nice doom riff, which then goes to something more ambient.  "Light" is probably my favorite.  When I hear this song, there's a "Time & Grace" feel to it.  And of course I loved those tribal-esque drum beats during the end of the track.  And then we have "River's End" to finish up.  Has a nice 90's hardcore metal riff and then a sweet guitar solo.

The production was well done.  The vocals have gotten very intense from the last album.  Great guitar work and of course the rhythm section sound great.  I would have loved to hear a studio version of "Black Snail",  But after hearing the new e.p., I really don't know how it will fit.  For sure this is a whole new Hellbeard.  And this new Hellbeard makes me want to punch Hitler even harder.  A awesome e.p. if you enjoy post-metal, sludge, and doom.

Anticipating Music in 2013

As we get closer to summer, I figure to write down some bands that I'm looking forward to listening to.  Now most of them are local act.  I really don't want to focus on the more established act.  These are bands that are cutting their teeth and make a name for themselves.

KYNG

Glad to see these lads are working on their sophomore album.  "Trample Sun" was a amazing album and won a bunch of fans from across the nation.  I can only imagine that this album will be more rocking.  Being a fan of Kyng for so long, I know they will bring something new and that is what I'm anticipating the most.  With Tony Castaneda being 100% after his car accident, I'm sure they are going to give their fans another kick-arse hard rock album.

AKEM MANAH

Next month, Akem Manah will release their new album, "Demon of the Sabbat - Part 1".  After hearing "Reign in Terror" and "Worship in Fire", I know it's going to be a heavy album.  On this album, Dead Nedry is assisted by Chris Lollis (ex-Nile) on bass and Ivan de Prume (ex-White Zombie) on drums.  Also on the new album is Scott Von Heldt (Head) doing leads for two tracks.  And Adam Richardson of Ramesses, doing guest vocals on "Demon Rise"

E.N.V.Y

Last I check, the boys from West Virginia are working on some new material.  They've already put out a new track called "The Problem".  And it's a killer track.  Don't know if the new release is going to be another e.p. or a full-length.  And they haven't set a date for a release.  Really looking forward to some new E.N.V.Y.

THE DEAL

The Deal features members of a band I fell in love with called El Death.  I was saddened to hear they no longer exist.  But I did hear that some members started a new band.  This band puts on a killer show.  So most likely their album will be just killer, too.  Can't wait to hear the finished product.

LIGHTS AND THE WINDOWS

It's great to see that my pal, Devin Stannard, has found a stable line-up.  Before, I knew them as A City Alive; a great instrumental band who's intensity reminded me of Pelican.  With Lights and the Windows, there is more layers now with a vocalist who plays keyboard and guitar.  Not sure when they're going to put out a demo or ep/full-length, but it's something I'm looking forward to hearing.

HELLBEARD

"Scarecrow" was a bad-arse album.  I can only guess that their follow-up will just as crushing.  Of course  awhile back, their guitarist was in a bad accident and hand to heal is arm.  Also there were other personal issue that some of the band members had to take care of.  Now as everything is sorted out, Hellbeard are back on stage and destroying the Bay Area.  So far, the only new material I've heard is "Black Snail".  Hopefully by the end of the year, they'll get back in the studio and record something.

HEAD TRANSFER PROCESS

With Chixxie Dixx being on hiatus soon, I hope to hear something new from Head Transfer Process.  It's been awhile since I've heard anything from them.  Not sure how busy some of the members are, but I hope they get back together to work on some new tunes.

STEAL ANOTHER DAY

Steal Another Day is a new band started by Casey Burke (ex-E.N.V.Y)  From the teaser, Steal Another Day sound like a straight-forward hard rock band.  Very different from E.N.V.Y.  I like what Casey is going with this and would like to hear more from Steal Another Day.

Like these bands on facebook for more info on upcoming shows and releases;

HELLBEARD "SCARECROW" (2010)

For a couple of years, I've been a huge fan of Oakland's Hellbeard. Their take on the sludge/post-metal sound almost has a very 80's Bay Area sound. In 2010, they released their debut album, Scarecrow, which I've been playing on rotation in my car for many years. The album starts off with "Locomotive" which is a awesome opener. Very Neurosis-esqe with a lot of steam. By the end of the song, you wish the song continues because that drum part was great. The title track is a also favorite of mine's. But the one that I enjoy the most is "Colloused", which also has a great ending that you don't want it to stop. As a matter of fact, I always press the repeat button. Usually while listening to a full album, I like to keep the flow going. But can't help myself but to hear that song one more time. So in conclusion, Hellbeard's "Scarecrow" gets "5 Hitlers Punched in the Face". Believe me, after listening to this album, you just want to punch 5 Hitlers in the damn face. -Mikey O)))-
